Article detailing one such scheme in Brooklyn, NY. Although most of the stolen packages contained illegal narcotics, it mention there were other items stolen.

As much as I enjoy receiving mail & parcels covered in postage, I wonder how often this might tip off a thief as to the contents?

Greeting cards are fair game, too, as noted in this recent article:

Today's Providence Journal (Rhode Island) there was a story about a postal clerk stealing money from greeting cards. I guess thievery is able to show up anywhere.

I wonder how many packages get through compared to the few they catch. Let that be a lesson- don't send 12 lbs of pot at a time send 2 boxes of 6 each . I remember getting lbs of gemstone rough from Thailand and it always amazed me that the packages were never opened by customs considering Thailand could be a source of illegal goods. I also remember a guy selling CD's years ago and telling me that the guy at the post office stole every package coming from one of them mail order music companies. I wonder if all you can grab was in the new contracts?

I recently received a gold coin through the mail. It was interesting that the return address had nothing to do with the actual name of the business.. Instead of the real name of the business, which would have been a sure indication what was in the parcel, a really innocuous name was used. Nothing to tip off a potential thief that there was something valuable in the parcel.
