Paypal Query :

It is not an email as you stated, so the url looks OK only if the remainder of the url does not have another '.xxx' to it.

Example 'https://www.paypal.com.foolyou.exe' or something. Having extra '/' marks and such like is OK.

If this happened after you logged in to your PayPal account then it should be OK.

You might have Not used your bank account recently (used a credit card instead) or perhaps PayPal is just updating their info on you since you did move within the last year I think. Might be just routine.

If your address at the bank has changed then perhaps PayPal feels it necessary to verify your data again.

I do believe this happened to me years ago in similar circumstances. Frustrating and alarming and all that but they are just treating you as if you have just signed up all over again.

Problem fixed (superficially)

everything went smooth

The Jury is still out, and I await Paypal's response
(if any) which I doubt.

How I fixed...
Went back 1 month and loaded a "restore point"
from thereon Paypal did not request the information
this makes me feel I was probably scammed.

I am still having problems with my bank
I can load my bank account but cannot
download the last 200 tranactions, my browser will not allow it
I rang the commonwealth and they said nothing their end
have to change my browser to Firefox

Perhaps, after downloading a program (I just d/l skype)
it has auto loaded a new browser (IE8) which causes problems
I'll keep in touch.

If you have WinXP then IE8 is a problem causer, along with Service Pack 3. You don't need the IE8 with WinXP or SP3 and should not have them, and if you have them, get rid of them (uninstall).

I have used use Firefox (and updates) for years with no problems.

I have to concur with puzzler, I prefer firefox handsdown over IE. I've also had more than my share of problems with Paypal.

Yes you can uninstall it or both. Just the regular add / remove programs in the Control Panel or whatever it is called in the 'new' way. I still use the old way. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

You can keep them and no harm will happen, just slows down the whole system usually, takes up resources etc that it doesn't have to to make it work.

It is assumed you have Win7 or later for these things, even though they say it will work with XP. 'Will work' is a term that needs understanding from a Windows salesman's point of view though.

You need some version of IE installed (I have IE7 only) because some programs won't work without it being there. But to my mind it and Windows itself is still too open to whatever wants to come along and get in.

Like living up here and leaving the door open when you go to sleep. Mice, raccoons, coyotes, stray cats, non-stamp people, etc can come wandering by and drop in for a quick snack or look see. Stamp people are welcome!

I recently checked out of paypal and they asked me wanted me to pay straight from my bank account. They said if I did they would credit me $5. I'm guessing they are trying to bypass the middle man and going straight for the cash from your bank account. Everything looked legit so I took the money.

Your issue is not related to paypal or your browser...
I suspect what you have (had) is a URL redirect trojan.
by going to a restore point you overwrote the trojan. It is also one that is hard for AV software makers to detect.
My wife had it and it took two nights with Norton to get rid of it.
You should be running IE8 or Firefox 7.0.1 at a minimum... do not removes XP sp3...

A few month ago my paypal account was hacked and 107 dollars takin out of my account. At the time I only had $2 in the paypal account and wasnt to over worried about it it happen on a friday evening and decided to call pay pal on Monday moring to sort it out. After all I was only going to be out 2 bucks, but on sunday I was checking my bank balance online and noticed a paypal payment of $105. For some reason paypal cleared the payment of 107 and then took the remainer out of my bank accout?? I live in Canada and it takes 5 days to add money to your paypal ac by Bank so how in the hell could they take the amount needed to make the payment. the worst part is I use a separate account to deal with paypal so the banks charged me a 40 dollar NSF charge as well.
the guy who hacked into my account was using some sort of spy-ware.
I contacted paypal and they reimbursed my account for 107 dollars but not the nsf charge, the banks waved the charge.
Paypal said it was because I WAS USING THE SAME PASSWORD FOR MY EMAIL ACCOUNT THAT I USE FOR PAYPAL. warning to all do not use the same password, I was lucky to get it all sorted out.
you be surprised the amount of people that use the same password for both accounts.
