Just wanted to introduce myself......
Im pretty new at all this. So heres the story....
I was given this cardboard box by my moms aunt, about 1990. Full of stamps. I mean FULL. Needless to say, I was a kid, and the box got jammed in the back of the closet. Since, it has move with me 4 times, stored in attics, garages, basements. About a week ago, I was in the attic getting out the halloween decorations, and unearthed the box once again. Decided to try and organize it.
So here I am, four days later. I must have gone through 20,000 stamps in the last four days. I am not joking. I took some pictures of the mess. My wife probably thinks I've lost it.
Anyway, I dont really know too much about philately, although I've learned quite a bit in the last few days. Theses stamps are from all around the world... (138 countries so far),and seem to be from early 1900s thru about 1960. More than half are unused, never hinged, and seem to be in excellent condition. Many make up what seems to be a set of images.
So here I go trying to figure out what I really have. I must say I never though I would be so interested in stamps, but it seems I have been captivated. I basically have a world history sitting on my kitchen table.... Looking forward to an education........

Ok lets see if I can do this.(not too computer savvy)... In the box, just crammed in there was this...  and a tangled mess of stamps. So I got some envelopes and some boxes and went to town. Three days later I have this...  aaaand this...  the stamps are mostly from these..  anyone familar with this? anyway, now that I have everything somewhat under control, I just need to figure out where to start.... |

It's hard for me not to sit at my desk without some sort of beverage, but I try not to when I'm working on stamps. If I can't resist the temptation, I usually put the drink on a side table or in another chair so that I have to turn away from my work surface to reach it. I drink, then put it back where I can't possibly knock it over near my stamps. But, I didn't mean to chastise you  -- kind of like do as I say, not as I do ... KirkS |

Hello jmaplewood, welcome!  May I suggest you re-post all the beautiful pictures and story to a New topic (you start it) in the main stamp collecting forum here. That way lots of people will get to see your story and stamps and you will have more answers and help. In here, in the personal members only area, not too many people come at all times. But out in the regular areas lots of people see a nicely titled topic or thread. This area is usually used mostly to introduce your self, and I apologize if that is all you are doing. It looks like a lot of work and you are now a world explorer. I have been doing this for 40 years or so off and on and I still know nothing. |

Jmaplewood, YOU are in for some fun. Going through that many stamps can seem like a daunting task, but sit back and enjoy it, pieces at a time. Sounds like you are well on your way sorting by country is a great first step. Take it slow and don't let it push you under. You will enjoy the time and it will be time well spent.
