Lottery Win Purchase....

Talking over dinner one night to some friends when the Euro Millions Lottery had reached over 100 million about what we would buy if we won.

I said that I would buy a complete room or two full of stamps...complete collections, albums, mixed boxes, kiloware, classics to modern etc etc... all the walls with shelving full, floor completely covered etc and just lock myself away until some semblance of order had been brought to it all....shall we say that as a suggestion it was met with a stunned silence.

Why the !! would you want to do that?...was about the kindest comment.

The massive gulf between those who collect and those who do not was shown once again.

So what would you buy?

I would probably do the same, but I would ease into it with one country at a time. The OCD in me would drive me insane if I had a room or two full of unorganized collections.

I would first start with building the Philatelic Library of my dreams with every specialized catalog I could get my hands on. Next, I'd probably start with completing my South Korea and U.S. Bureau Precancel Collections and then move on to Japan, British Commonwealth, and other countries of interest with Revenues and Charity Seals in the mix as well.

I'd start with the US Columbians -- MNH blocks of 4

The last 17 Canadian stamps that I can't afford these days. Mind you, there are 3 that I never see come up.
Then, the early US stamps that I don't have.
And finally, a room to put it all in! My office is my computer play area is my stamp collecting room.

whilst I do not thrive on chaos I certainly really enjoy the unorganised large accumulations I have been fortunate to buy in the past and hopefully in the future.

Back in the 1980's my wife and I used to take all of the stamps sent in to Christian Aid and a National Dog Charity locally and sort them on their behalf so they could get the most for them, (selling specific mixes on to large kiloware dealers)..... returned home from work one day to be told that a delivery had come from one of the charities and that my wife had carried them up to the spare bedroom.

Went to have a look and found 50 sacks of unsorted kiloware at an average of 40 pounds a bag making a grand total of just under a ton in weight....wonderful!

Had a job at the time which was basically sitting around waiting for something to happen so used to take shopping bags to work to sort.

We must have sorted 5 or 6 tons over a two year period.

OK First I'd have to find a bigger house, employ a housekeeper, and let my husband leave work to take care of the kids...
OK - Now I've got time to think about stamps...
I need a fast car to get me to the auctions and stamp shops - an Audi TT should do it (I'm not greedy).
Maybe a helicopter, learjet and pilot, in case I need to find stamps in other countries.
A librarian to keep track of my growing stamp literature, and a chef to keep me supplied with midnight snacks as I work late into the night.
Oh and last but not least, I'd give all my SCF buddies $10,000 each to spend on stamps.

Definitely need a room or two, for sure. Maybe buy a nearby house for longer term storage.

I could hire someone to be my stamp assistant, too. To take care of the more menial tasks, like soaking and creating my album pages.

I would buy a better printer and scanner.

And I would buy that expensive watermark detector.

Well Brian, like you I would have suggested the same idea but with a different slant - forget the one or two rooms. With 100 million Euros, I would build a whole house just for stamps

I would still be thrifty and hunt for best deals on some definatly more rare items. I know there are 10's of 1000's of items I don't have but would hate to run out buy the ones I want and then what. Would be nice to travel and not have to think twice about pulling the trigger when you find those specials. Definatly would put all the dupes for grabs on good ole SCF / Can't forget where ya come from and who helped along the way.

Wow, talk about like minds. That's a fantasy I have all the time. But I never thought about two rooms, just one huge big room. Or with that amount of money a new house just for my stamps.

I would buy a nice mint set of the Graf Zeppelins, place each on an envelope and mail to myself so that I would have a nice used set to put in my used album. Also would send each of you a nice sheet of forever stamps (is there not a tongue-in-cheek smilie?)

I would set my stamps aside and do a lot of travelling..the great wall of China, volcano and Mayan ruins of Guatemala...i have not gone crazy spending on stamps yet...i would probably spend a bit more with the millions if it seemed like a good deal !!

Well I love travelling heavy metal, and am really getting into stamps, so I think I'd bounce around the world going to heavy metal gigs, attending stamp auctions, visiting dealers, buying up collections etc until I manage to fill up one of those cargo containers. Ship it home to my shiney new mansion and get sorting :)

1st thing I would do is stop selling my stamps that at the minute are making ends meet at our place.
2nd I would help all our children in their needs and endeavours.

And if anything was left start collecting Kangaroo and Map of Australia bi-colours 1913-1935 from 5 shillings to 2 pounds.

I am not sure about the euro though.
Most of Europe is turning into 3rd world countries at present.

If I won 100 million euro with my luck I would only be able to buy 4 burgers and have nothing left over for stamps.

Just out of curiosity, KGV,just how BIG would those burgers be? If I won the lottery, I would start up a stamp club for young people and start them off with 100 dollars worth of stamps each. Then I would PARTY ]
