I picked this up recently. Does anyone have an angle on how these were used, and catalog value?

Also, any clues about this cancel would be welcome

Nice! It's a letter card from the Berliner Packetfahrt Gesselschaft private post in Berlin and appears to have been used in 1898. The Postmark just says "Packet Fahrt" and the date.

I have an old Michel catalogue of German local stamps which includes 204 different stamps issued by this this company including some in the same design as the stamp on this card but it doesn't list postal stationery.

Berliner Packetfahrt Gesselschaft, bw. 1884-1924.
It says they had separate red post-boxes in the city, the card should be put in one of those... (`Nur in die rot(h)en Kasten der Packetfahrt zu werfen`) (Bayern1kreuzer will correct me, if I mistranslated)... I was looking for a picture how they would look like, but didn`t find...

AFAIK, Michel doesn't publish a catalog listing private postal stationery. The stamp version is listed in Michel's Privatpostmarken catalog as Mi 67a [pale blue, 1896] or 68b [ultramarine, 1897] (Rod, note the "K" versus "C" in "AKTIEN-")

It should be listed in Müller's Ganzsachenkatalog der deutschen Privatpost, but I'm on the road for work and I don't have access at the moment. I'll check for you when I get home.

Months ago I stumbled upon a website link that listed all of the "local" posts of Germany. Was at work and forgot to send myself a link. If I ever find it again, I will share it with you all. Great cover smauggie

smauggie,

Sorry for the delay in getting back with you on this one. This is from Horst Müller's Ganzsachenkatalog der deutschen Privatpost, 1873 bis 1914 Band 1: Aachen bis Dresden (2009).

The first value is mint, the second used.

This is cataloged as a Faltbrief (FB), or folded letter. The only other notation as to their use is a note that they were generally used very little by the packet line.

Catalogs for 90 Euros used! That puts it on the list of my top 5 most valuable philatelic items I own.

Still, can't quite my day job.
