OK I been looking High & low for a reasonable #71. You all probably know by now that I fancy proofs & essays so I came across this this morning and "BLAM-O" It was mine! (Thank you pay-pal) I just bought it about 5 minutes ago so it's not in hand yet but you can be certain it'll make another appearance as soon as it arrives. Enjoy!

It says it's a 71-E2b? Anyone have a specialized catalog handy? I'm not familiar with the sub script usually there is just a P. Any insight here?

Scott's lists a 71-E2 30c type b as "Premier Gravure" plate essay on India (formerly No. 61P3), deep red orange.

It defined premier gravure die as "left side of frame and silhouette at lower right unfinished.

Cat is $500.

well that can't be right. I did pay a little more than I usually would for a proof but not even half of that that. Although monetary value doesn't really matter much to me however if that's right than either it was poorly misrepresented or I got one heck of a deal.
Thank you for the info.

edit:
I noticed your catalog description mentions "essay". It is clearly a proof but can a proof be an essay? Also the left side of frame looks normal to me!

It looks a bunch of 71P3's 71P4's I been seeing on the net so my guess is that is more like it.

Once again, I'm amazed at how afforable this stamp is. I really need to consider creating a 19th century proof collection. I think it would be cheaper in the long run ...

That's what I'm too Rileysan. I'm casually buying the pictorials and the #63-#77 all in proofs. Then maybe some of the higher denominated banknotes. I'm just getting them when I see them along the hunt and not specifically tracking them down- yet.

edited for typo.

Actually in most cases the proofs are cheaper than mint singles. I've thought about doing a set of the revenue proofs, but I've never bothered to start on them.
