Hi Everyone!
I have been staring at 599's for a while, and this is the only one that looks close to a 599A.

I tried scanning a few that looked close, but they seem to need to be scanned individually what do you think? The right one is actually the 1 I did single out. Got some pretty mean cancels

Then some odd balls I found

I've looked at about the 100 or so coils I have and there are several shades of carmine but didn't see any lake, but then I'm not sure I'd realize if I did. Some of the other posts say it's kind brown red and I do have some dark red ones plus 100's of regular A157's to sort...
Thanks in advance for input!
Nick

Both the 599 and 599A are carmine according to the Scott Specialized Catalogue. The most identifiable feature that I look for are the "three heavy lines at top center" of George's head. There are other differences, but once you have the two types next to each other, the heavy hair lines in the 599A are the most obvious. Based on what I see, I'd say your first picture, the one you suspected was one, is a 599A.

I agree that none are carmine lake and that the first one is definitely Type II (599A). In addition to the recut hair the circle in the lower weft corner has a much thinner line.

Just saw a purported 599A on ebay. It's a very clear scan, but the item lacked the three heavy hair lines, and the other identifying characteristics of the #599A. It's up to $136 with 21 bidders dukin' out for it. Bidding is up in 15 hours. Seller is 3060dlstjs. I've contacted sellers in the past when something is really really obvious to ask that they remove the item from auction, but I'm clearly no expert by any stretch of the imagination. I have no intention on bidding on this item, but I really hate to see people buying a bogus stamp. I could use an assist/reality check from someone else to verify if I'm correct before I go to the seller with the bad news. Any help out there?

It sure looks like a type I (Scott 599) to me. The stamp is heavily inked which shows a little more on the one hairline but the it is not recut. The circles in the corners are a real giveaway that its not 599A.

Just received a message from the seller of that "599A". He pulled it off the auction. Nice note; said he appreciated me catching the error. Highest bid ended up being $136.
