Can't tell from pictures this small. The cancel date is right, but I can't tell if the paper type (color, thickness) is correct.

I know that anecdotally, the silk papers of the first issue are referred to as having red or blue threads, (and I'm guilty of this as anyone else), but when I look through my stock of silk papers (I have about 50 pieces beyond those that I show on my website), I have zero with red threads. Nor do I see any in major auction results with read threads. They're always blue.

So it may be that it is strictly blue threads in the silk papers; I should go back and reread that section of the Boston Book and also the Revenue Unit Columns, to see if there is any commentary.

Because of the huge price discrepancy between R1c and R1d, in-hand examination under high magnification would be required.

jayvin,

I totally agree with revenuecollector. I would be more than happy to examine it in-hand for you. Of course, it'll take several years of examinations before any decision could be rendered.

All kidding aside, if it has a red thread, get a cert on it or at least a professional opinion. I have a few silks as well and none have red threads that I can recall.

Art & Dan,

Thanks for the help.
As these are from the estate of my Father-in-law and he collected for over 70 years I thought I would try to relook at some of the stamps.

I still have a question about a 8XU Postmaster Provisional that no-one wants to guess at what it is.

Maybe I should try an expert first, any ideas who?

For the money, Bill Weiss no question. He can identify for $5.00 or $10.00, I don't remember and will certify it for $25.00.
