How do you feel about creating a list of sellers to recommend to other SCF members.

This list of sellers will then become the "SCF Preferred Sellers List". Like it or not and I'm not saying that's a bad thing. However, who is going to manage that list, confirm that people like Lang don't get on it, verify the data, identify sellers contents, provide phone numbers, websites and email address?

All in all a potential dangerous thing and a major headache for someone. Perhaps a "Satisfied Supplier List" with a minimum of xx satisfied members voting for them?

Random Thoughts from KirkS....

* As a topic/list, I think this is one too volatile. Seems like every time we have a discussion about ebay dealers, the tone gets harsh and feelings are hurt.
* Not everyone has the same experience with the same sellers -- one dealer may give you great deals on great material, but not like dealing with me. That doesn't mean he's a crook.
* We already do this when we post positive experiences here. I will admit they aren't all in the same place, but all you have to do is search SCF for Langs and you'll quickly see the consensus of opinions.
* The list would be extremely difficult to maintain -- unless we implement a feedback system like the one used on ebay -- we all know that's perfect :-)

Just my 2¢ worth of initial reaction...

I would see no harm in providing a "Safe to do business with" list. There are many good honest sellers out there that many have never heard of and it would be a good avenue for both buyer and seller as it rewards honest sellers with the potential of more business and provides buyers more avenues for comparative shopping.

I much prefer the accumulation of information that comes from discussions over time, as opposed to a list.

The item, the experience described, and the person relating the experience, all factor in to my thoughts about a particular dealer. I wouldn't choose to ding a seller for some of the complaints that I've read online. Others, I'm happy to know to avoid.

Just in the last week, two different (large) dealers were named here, and there were adherents to both sides, positive and negative, for each. Some would have put them on the negative list, and some would have put them on the positive list. I don't see how we reconcile that. And I don't think we need to.

My 2d.

P.S., I purchased a number of items from one of the sellers now known to be one of the cartel members, and my experiences were fine. "She" would be on my safe-to-do-business-with list to this day, if (a) "she" was still active; and (b) I didn't know other information not related to my own experiences. I was buying $10-20 KGV material (generally varieties from Gibbons not listed in Scott), and wasn't bidding on the "priceless" Rhodesia doubleheads sold as MNH.

Needless to say, "she" was not universally safe to do business with.

Joe1225us, be careful making statements - it can lead to a Deformation situation. A 'general statement' is different from being specific - (he) identifiable person.

In Australia a well known Dealer(B.O.S.), who was Defamed in a Aussie Forum emailed me saying he was pursuing legal advice.

finches.. langs has been discussed in that manner on every forum I have seen.

Sorry about your issue in Australia, but here, freedom of speech goes a long way.
I wouldn't worry about defamation of character here...

I don't think a "list" is ultimately very helpful. What is useful is an individual report of a very helpful dealer. You can just report the " facts", and we can take it for what it is worth. :-). Also, a factual report of a very "unhelpful" transaction with a dealer is useful. Again, just the facts. :-)

We are making a simple proposal very complicated. All SV suggested is we make a list of recommended dealers, nothing about listing dealers with bad experiences, or nothing about smudging anyone. Perhaps just a simple list of dealers (with website ID sorted alphabetically) that members had great experiences with, and the main areas they cover.

Of course, as KikS said, someone would have to maintain it...

I think that anyone could maintain it.
I don't think I would mind doing it. But we must have the web owners permission first.
We couldn't do it without their consent of course.

I voted yes because all I thought it would be would be someone posting a note stating - "Did business with ebay seller/dealer/auction hhouse happystamps123/Monorail Stamps/Royal Stamp Auctions, and was pleased with the transaction. I recommend them. They sell US Stamps/Spanish Revenues/Worldwide stamps and covers."

And I thought this was about "recommending" good sellers, and would only point out bad sellers by the fact that their name was not mentioned (as it should be).

If that is not the plan, I change my vote to a no.

The first time someone posts, "I had a good experience with M_____" or "n_______" or "W_____ L______" we'll be off to the races.

Especially if the poster has fewer than ten posts.

Just sayin'...

It does not matter at what stage in life I have been at I listen to good advice and look for it, in action to see the why of it all.

"Never mix business with pleasure".

I have trouble with some of the buying and selling that we already have on SCF forums because business is getting mixed up with pleasure. The newer member trying to get excepted can mix business with pleasure trying to be wanted and fussed over. It could also be a so called "clique" group. Very much open for corruption in thought and deed. By nature people with good intent can end up corrupt in business but in pleasure it is truer and a safer environment for the many to be involved in. Our SCF proves this, it has stood the test of time.
If you do not want your 12 year old daughter to hear it or be apart of it then we do not want it here. There is a lot of wisdom in this SCF foundation statement or my paraphrase of it. I would like to see all selling on SCF stopped.

More than my 2 pounds worth. KGV.
