I am going through a large collection.
Up to this point I have accepted the ID of the stamps in the books.

Now I am going through the "shoe-boxes" and extras books.

Being a color-deficient person (I see all the colors, I just see them differently than you).
I spent 6 hrs in the local library trying to ID the Hungary envelope. This works BUT not when there are small color differences or looking for that small "blue" silk thread on the Revenue stamps.

I know about Bill Weiss and sending a envelope of 50-3cent stamps would not be cost effective.

If there was a local club (nearest club I can find is over 100 miles), I would go to them and see what kind of help I could get.

Is there an organization that you can send stamps to for ID?
You all, give more free advice than can be expected of anyone.

So any great Ideas!!

I didn't say FREE just $5 a stamp is much when there are 100s of stamps.

Those of you that follow the auction houses, will they sort the boxes for good stamps?

Maybe you could just focus on an area of philately that does not require the ability to tell between subtle color differences.

I don't know why but I had to laugh when I read that.

Good advice though.

Well.. One idea could be to.. Scan them.. Compare image to a color palette..? Change to black/white image? Use photoshop and I don't know what it's called in English, but the tool that you use to press a part of the image and you select that color. Use this on the stamp and then make a box of that color next to a color palette? Changing saturation/hue maybe?

If there is only e.g 2 versions of Blue on the stamp, and they are in a palette, it must be comparable digitally, and hopefully the scanning won't mess up colours too much..

Just some ideas..
Must be some way you can figure it out..

Hi! jayvin.

To me the hardest part to stamp collecting is shades and I have basically no ability to discern the subtle changes to shades.

I have tried to get help in this area and never got a single reply from many approaches to people who said they had knowledge in this area. It is like, do not talk about shades but I do not understand why!

Maybe it is because the shade information I wanted was for Australia KGV stamps. There is still so much stamping to do other than shades.

Trying to do shades on-line does not work as every one sees the stamp in a different way because of our computers are all different in this area. I can very much understand your frustration and I wish I had a proper answer to your question.

Always Happy Stamping. KGV.

I can see this is going to be a difficult task. Tomten's idea of using Photoshop to compare colors may work. I will have to see if that is usable and repost (first, would be to buy a color gauge and photoshop).

Being that he collected for over 70 years, I do believe that his books are 99% correct. It is the extras, spares, and stock books that are giving me a hard time. I just dumped the 3 cent envelope on the scanner, I am sure that you collectors are going to look and go "WOW, looks like fun".

KGV Collector these pics are for you!

The pile on the scanner will take some time, but they will mostly sort themselves with a copy of Scott at hand. (Or even one of Mystic's mail-order catalogs.)

You're right...looks like fun.

Nope, I'd only be guessing. (I spend more time looking at the foreign stuff...my U.S. interests are pretty limited in scope.)
