First time I have come across these, Remainders? CTO? I cannot spot any reference to them (The Pmks or cancellation type) in Gibbons.

Jerry, kick me in the butt will you? Sorry, I was referring to the cancel marks, it looks bold and ugly without dates etc. It doesn't appear to me to be a regular cancel. Being that you specialise in South America, have you seen them before? I apologise for causing you unnecessary work |

G'Day Rodney Bend over for another butt kick. El Salvador is Central America and NOT South America As far as cancels are concerned I have seen cancels that really are clear all the way to cancels that look like these. For instance, some Colombian SCADTA cancels are worse than these, just big black blobs. Io with Latin America expect really bad cancels from a lot of the countries. I hope that helps. Jerry B |

Sheesh Apologies to all El Salvadorians So those ES cancels are normal postage cancellations, who would have thought! Thanks Jerry, |

Hi Rodney OOPS! I have to take back that last kick. I did not see the ES in the scans I looked through my Minkus, which is pretty good for Latin America, and could find no overprint or reference like that shown. So, I am assuming that it is a cancel with the ES for El Salvador. A good clue is the bottom left stamp with 2 strikes. If it was a misplaced overprint, happens a lot on Latin America stamps, it would be impossible to be in the positions shown. Jerry B |

How do you take back a kick in the butt So, now I have your attention. I recall the barred 'remainders" of Labuan I have a feeling these could be the same, I don't recall ever seeing a cover with such a aggressive cancel. One to place on the curiosity list Jerry. I think you are our only central american specialist. |

Hi Rodney When I get to the store I will have a look at El Salvador and see if there are cancels like yours. Jerry B (P.S. I still can't see the ES ) |

Solved. It is a genuine forme cancel referred to as a "wheel" cancel. Lots of examples on the web, with references to "remainders" and counterfeit "wheel" cancels thereon I am sure mine are forged. Thanks for listening and moral support Jerry. Genuine wheel cancel in violet |

Hi Rodney Good work! Quote: Thanks for listening and moral support Jerry. The only way one can learn is to have discussions like this. The thanks goes to you. Now we both know what it is and I now see the ES, thanks. I have to go for cataract surgery so things are a little blurry. I am delaying it for as long as possible. Being your eyes is the scary thing although it isn't like years ago. The doctor said 15-20 minutes tops. By the way. The "Franquero Oficial" overprint is found on El Salvador, Nicaragua and Ecuador stamps. Most of these are Seebeck reprints. Nicholas Seebeck did a bang up job on collectors. Quote: I cannot find the home page http://www.elsalvadorphilately.org/You have to dig a little, starting at the handbook link, to get to the page you cited. Jerry B |
