While this is definitely a contrived cover, the question is did it pay the correct rate ? What was the Around the world rate in 1929 ? This is a cover from the LZ-127 Zeppelin Around the world flight. The Franking adds up to $1.85 if I added correctly, now all I need to do is determine how far this letter flew.... Here is a little tidbit about it.

I have this postcard from the same flight. No additional postage other than the (4) 24-cent stamps ($0.96 total) was used:

The Around the world cost was $3.55, Letter rate to Germany $1.85, Postcard rate to Germany, .96c. So the question remains, Commercial or Philatelic?

You'll have a hard time convincing anyone that a Zeppelin cover was anything but philatelic - especially with all that flowery writing and ornamentation. If it had a commercial corner card and a typed address, maybe. In the case of the two illustrated in this tread, I'd assume philatelic unless proven otherwise.

I agree with you completely Chip as I consider any special event cover to be of Philatelic nature as it was created specifically for that purpose. But the cover has a twist as it is addressed to an individual and pays the correct rate for the delivery method. I should have started a poll....My vote would have been Philatelic. Thanks again for your help with the route and Postmarks Chip !
