Hey guys,

As suggested on this site, rather than measuring, I've cut a washington 1c to overlay to see if its smaller than for the Franklin 2c in question (the one with the straight line cancel). Do you think it has a shot to be the famed 594?

I literally know nothing about stamps, so if I'm way off on this one, sorry.

-Chris

Sorry Freman-- not even close.
The stamp you're looking at is a coil stamp-- you buy them in rolls, they can go in dispensers or machines to come out one at a time.
Because this coil is also a rotary press stamp, it is larger.

The stamp you're looking for should be perforated on all 4 sides....

And by the way, Welcome!
Ray

Besides the fact that it is the wrong color, wrong perfs, and wrong cancel, it is pretty close!

Welcome to the forum Freemen

The Washington / Franklin heads are a study all by themselves and one can spend a lifetime collecting all the varieties they have. They are a rewarding focus in philately though regardless of the work involved.

Bujutsu-- some folks would refer to this stamp as a Washington-Franklin, but it is actually one of the "4th Bureau" set. The last true W-F is #547, one of the high face value stamps ($5.00).

But, the 4th Bureaus have some of their own difficulties and challenges:
599 vs 599A, 634 vs 634A, 578 and 579, the 594/595/596 issue, and lastly, having to understand the difference between flat-plate printing and rotary press.

Both of these issues, the W-F and 4th Bureau's were during a period of transition between the older flat plate printing methods and the quicker and more efficient rotary press.....

Thanks-- hope this helps.... Ray
