No wonder the US Postal Service is in crisis, looking at these wages!

I wouldn't say that those wages are that outrageous. In fact I thought a few of them were pretty low.

UPS CEO Scott Davis earned more last year than all 38 of those USPS execs combined.

Maybe USPS needs to up its pay-rate in order to attract more competitive personnel.

Wt1, you are 100% right. It is time to act NOW.

IMO the Gov' should implement an immediate indefinite Salary freeze for those over $100,000 until those deadwood's restore USPS to full profitability.

If they don't perform - replace them from the ranks with people who have forward thinking ideas for cost cutting and profitability.

maybe they need to hire a few more VPs to see why they need so many VPs?

This website shows the salaries of US Government Officials from the President on down to Cabinet Members. It's a few years old now, but it would seem that only the President of the United States has a higher salary than the post office staff listed in the above link. Here's the proof:

Potter was only making as much as the chancellor/president at pretty much any major public university in the U.S. (and way less than some of them).

And the football coaches at the big universities are making three times that.

I'm not sure why we expect the USPS to turn a profit. Sure, I'd like them to lose as little as possible under the circumstances, but they provide a vital service in the national interest.

We're not asking the Navy to show that they turned a profit last year.

I hate discussions about salaries.

People take one look at a number and over-react because they think it's TOO HIGH.

When you make comparisons about USPS, remember you're talking about a Fortune 100-sized organization. I work in the I.T. business -- the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for the post office makes $219K. A comparable position in a large company would undoubtedly pay more.

Hey Folks! Think about how BIG the post office is. Can you imagine managing all the computers, networks, information, and databases? USPS used to have the largest Novell Network in the world. I'm not sure if they still have Novell, or have migrated to new products, but it's still a HUGE network.

Also, those employees are senior management meaning they likely have 25 or 30 years of experience - it's not fair to compare them to entry-level salaries.

One last thing to consider -- imagine your favorite restaurant with a manager making $45K per year. You get angry because that is way too much money. So fire him and hire a teenager with no experience to run the pace for $20K per year. Do you think you'd still be eating there a year later?

Do you think incompetent and underpaid management can attract and keep quality employees. For godssake, you get what you pay for.

<end of rant>

I agree it may be a Fortune 100-sized organization, but the fact remains that they are in a financial mess that would have made other organizations file for bankruptcy long ago. As demonstrated in the earlier posts, these USPS executives make more money than anyone in the US Government, excepting the President of the United States. That is what I feel is wrong.

Even though the USPS touts itself as an independent organization, I still consider it a piece of the Federal government and in that sense, their salaries are high in comparison to other Federal government officials.

In the for-profit sector, if you can get hired as a CFO or CIO and earn millions in salary, best of luck to you, but I can't view the USPS in that same light, especially when no other company could be in such a financial mess and still survive.

The private sector has a tremendous luxury in that they have a pretty clear mandate - "MAKE MONEY". The public sector has a comparatively much more ambiguous mandate. My point isn't so different than the point made above wrt The Navy. When postal service was being pioneered - tremendous ingenuity and innovativeness was required on behalf of people who worked in the public service. Today popular opinion doesn't support the message that people in the public service should be ambituous, innovative and inventive. I listened to a very good podcast lecture by Tony Benn former Postmaster General of the UK recollecting his experiences with Girobank - and his conluding idea was the same. (Look for hte podcast of the British Postal Museum at itunes if you're interested - I'd post the link but its too complicated).
