I have noticed that many people are selling fairly recent canadian stamps lots on ebay that are ungummed... If Canada is not cancelling the stamps, what stopping people from soaking them of and reusing them?
I am tempted...:-)

Interesting topic. I've noticed a lot of high face value stamps in lots of $50, $100, or more listed with no gum recently. Perhaps these are forgeries? It seems suspicious to me ...

Tis the season to sends gifts in parcels, so perhaps some people have thought of this and saved their higher value stamps until now (although it is getting a bit late to send parcel for Christmas I would think) to sell on ebay.

It is illegal. However, it is no doubt very difficult and uses a lot of time, money and resources to track down and prosecute an individual who happens to reuse a stamp now and then.

I think they are more concerned with large mailers and forgers and counterfeiters

There is a fellow I know here who sells mint Canada stamps at 75% of face value in lots of $100 or even as a contract and he will stick them on the envelopes, using older, odd denomination valued stamps to make up the postage rates. That sure beats paying 100% plus 15% HST tax down here in Nova Scotia.

...and it read to me like they don't give a Monkey's toss about Stamp Collectors. "It is unlawful to remove.....". So let's throw all our envelopes away, we can't soak them off anymore.

Yet, although they don't give a hoot about collectors [I am not complaining about Canada Post in particular, they are all at it], they will issue millions of dollars of stuff for collectors each year and expect them to buy it !

Sorry, it doesn't wash with me.

Re-Use.

I've seen a particular auction house that usually has a $2-3000 lot of high values no gum uncancelled up for grabs. Said lots usually sell at 50-60% of face but of course there is the auction house juice plus tax which brings them up to near face. However they do state that they are as is, no guarantee as to being washed or cancels removed. Must be a happy chemist somewhere that came up with magic potion that erases cancels without hurting the underlying stamp face. Wonder if its CLR they say it cleans almost anything. ( NOTE: do not use CLR or any other chemical on your stamps. Statement was for humour only)

The French translates to:
The law prohibits the use of a postage stamp that has already been used.

I think Canada Post is not stating the law as it is written but just reminding you that there does exist a law on the books in Canada that makes the use of an already used postage stamp unlawful.

I do not think that either their statement or the actual law says anything about ganging up on collectors. That is most likely the accounting department because I am watching them right now on hidden camera and seeing what they are up to.

And of course, everyone, acting as true pirates of the Barbary Coast, er, stamp collectors that is, can make their own decisions as to whether they wish to risk serving time on an oar galley, I mean mopping the Post Office floors or even somewhere less pleasing, when they attempt to reuse a non-cancelled (bad postal people, bad!) stamp and then the Spanish Inquisition jumps out all of a sudden and catches you in the act, as their main weapon is surprise!

I myself am most displeased when I mail a stamp to myself to get a nice cancel and it comes back not cancelled properly. So I send it off again sometimes, and again, until I do get a cancel.

But, selling stamps on ebay, I have had feedback letting me know that some colectors appreciate a modern cover with nice stamps on, and properly cancelled also, as they are, no doubt, hard to come by unless you do it yourself and again and again.

And the amounts of uncancelled stamps we see on ebay are probably just the tip of the iceberg, so to speak. I personally have not read nor heard of any legal action taken against anyone for reusing postage stamps in Canada or elsewhere, recently that is. Which makes one wonder if any such action has ever happened or ever will?

It makes me wonder if the law was written years ago when postage was 3c and you made 5c for picking a barrel of apples.

Oh, by the way, it is also illegal to use new stamps that are ripped or torn in any way, and I have seen postal clerks do this constantly and even sell me some and say it is alright, use it anyway. I am being pushed to commit illegal acts by Canada Post themselves, or their representatives.

Makes you want to move to an island somewhere and grow bananas.

Another great post from Puzzler !
I was nodding in agreement, shaking my head in disagreement and finally spitting out my Coffee all over the keyboard, with laughter.

The moral is....don't eat or drink when you read SCF posts, especially when Puzzler is online !

I must have over $200 worth of Canadian stamps that have not been cancelled, and I have no problem reusing them. Yesterday I was in the post office which happens to be in shoppers drug mart(dept type store) and right next to the counter was a section selling office type supplies they had glue sticks for sale.

Wont be long till any cancelled Canadian stamps will be worth something, try finding a cancelled stamp maybe 1 in 10 letters I received have a cancel
