I am complete out of my comfort zone when it comes to precancels. I found these two that seemed out of place. First : I have never seen the circle before? Second : What is the MW NOV 51 ? Drew

The last one is easy. Montgomery Ward (as in the store/catalog mail order operation). They were the most prolific user of precancels back in the day (along with Sears which used the initials SRC).
The first one is a bit trickier. Looks like a typical NY, NY precancel with a circular overprint of some sort. Perhaps some precancel specialists can chime in to help you identify it.

Thanks wt1! Interesting things these precancels (no I will refrain from collecting them). I was reading up and sites say there are many many hundreds of thousands of varieties and types. *g*
Would be interesting to see what comes up about the circle or "O" overprint.

The circle has nothing to do with the precancel. It was probably applied by a collector or prankster long after the stamp was used. |

Another question regarding the Montgomery Ward - Precancel. I was looking at the free album pages at http://www.precancels.com/PrintedDa...bumn0711.pdf and looking at where it would go - do the dates have to match exactly? Would you classify the above stamp as MW-2 or MW-3? Trying my utmost not to start collecting these as well . Drew |

I think it's an MW-3. Some of the dated precancel types look very similar, sometimes different by only 0.5 mm. An accurate ruler may occasionally be needed to confirm the exact size of the dated overprints. If you've decided that you're going to start collecting dated precancels, some informative data is contained in this previous thread: https://goscf.com/t/12366&whichpage...d,Precancels |

StampStudy, The free album you posted only requires "Town & Type". A single type of MW could have 100's of different dates from the same town.
This is a MW-3 & on this stamp there are 99 different dates (Month/Year). This type was used from June,'51-July,'70. The .50 Liberty Series had 154 different dates on it using the MW-3 type. |

StampStudy as Chasa stated the circle overprint was placed on the stamp after the fact over the top of the precancel. |
