Just spotted this cool photo of the interior of a PRR RPO car. Think of all the letters that moved through this car in the day...

Somewhere around here I think I still have an old copy of one of the PRR RPO schedules. When I find it I will get a pic and post it
.

A little more crowded in use, 1920 picture from unknown RPO.

Nells: thanks for posting that. It's the first colour photo I've seen of the mail car operation. You sure get the impression they didn't see much of the countryside as the train rolled along.

I was wrong I don't have a PRR RPO schedule but I do have a booklet that was made in 1971 telling about the Trolley Car Mail Service in Philadelphia, Pa. Here a couple of pics from it.

Russ that picture removes the romance from the RPO, does not look like a place that would be enjoyable for 10 hours or so a day. Thanks for the reality check.

I love the postal history.
Then looking at these, it suddenly occurred to me.....doh!
Sitting here in my studio is a piece of railway postal history and I forgot all about it.
I've had this small (compared to the above pictures) 'mail slot' for years. I use it now to hold magazines and material for freelance jobs.

It's inscribed CNR in ink on the upper corner, and some of the pigeon holes still have typewriter written labels on them.
Right under my nose.
