Just happened to find on the internet this article from the October 1938 issue of Mechanix Illustrated. While quite dated to pre-World War II, I thought SCF members might find it to be an interesting look as to how people viewed postage stamps back in that day:

but I guess I would be pretty bitter if my name was Montgomery Mulford

actually just googled his name and he wrote several books about stamps too. Maybe he was just having a bad day

An interesting article that really brings to life the Hawkish sentiment of 1938.

Ironically, many of the points that the article makes about so-called "propaganda" stamps can also be said of US postage issuances.

If he were alive today (I am assuming he has died) he would no doubt be appalled at the number of new issues.
