Machine Cancel & Spray On Cancel From Same Mailing Facility

These were cropped from two Christmas cards I received today.

I was quite surprised to see that same mailing facility (Middlesex/Essex County, MA 018) uses BOTH a machine cancel and a spray on cancel. I wonder what constitutes the use of one type of postmark versus the other? Maybe they just employ both old and new equipment?
