Just received some late X-Mas gifts that I bought for myself & as someone who doesn't really collect the early issues I was hoping some of you veterans could help me out a bit.

The first one here I paid about $16 for. Originally I was planning on bidding no more than $5 but later decided I wanted it no matter what because of the centering. It looks like red rose to me and I know that #65 is usually a $1-2 stamp. Did I pay too much? Also does the star cancel add to the rarity factor much at all? Does the missing perfs affect the value much on such an old stamp?

This is the second one from the same seller. He mentioned that it may be 64B (rose pink) and it almost looks it to me. What do you think? I know its hard to tell from a normal scan but its certainly lighter than the stamp above (scanned with the same settings). Is it just a difference in paper toning? Do you think its worth sending in to have expertised? At least this one was only $4.

Thanks for your time,
P. Bear

I believe they are both 65's.
I think 16.00 is high, but the "paid" cancel is worth more then the star cancel. (+ .35)
the star cancel is not listed with a premium.

Panda.. you get my letter?

SV - hope you enjoyed your letter. Did the stamps get hand canceled? When I handed it to the clerk along with a few other letters she hand canceled all the envelopes except yours which she walked away with after a little "wow" reaction so I was a little worried. Hope they came through okay. I wouldn't try and soak them, though. The sheet that the stamps were from were stuck to another piece and some of the stamps have some thins.
