Would someone check my work here?

I think I have accurately defined Stamp #1, #3 and #4 (which was discussed in a separate thread).

What I'm not sure about is Stamp #2. Is it merely a color variety of Stamp #1 and should be designated as a #498? Or does the appearance of a more green shaded face reveal yet a different catalog variety?

Nothing of any great value here, but I've had these similar stamps sitting in a stockbook for way too long and have just gone through the trouble of trying to identify them.

Thanks.

As I'm not a specialist I can only chime in with my best opinion and I believe both stamps 1 & 2 to be #498. Scott lists this particular illustration only twice as perf. 11 -- one as flat plate and one as rotary.

The difference in color may be attributed to inking, toning of the paper, and/or difference in the exposure to light, elements, etc.

Back of second stamp scanned below. It doesn't appear greenish to me. But then what do I know? It's the very reason why I haven't tackled these stamps before now!

I agree with panda.bear that they are both Scott 498. Here are a few perf 11, flat plate 498s I pulled from my duplicate stock that show the shading differences.

If you're not already using them, the AskPhil and 1847USA Washington-Franklin identifiers are good resources.

Scott Specialized lists 4 different shades of green for the 498.

Thanks for the help. It's pretty much what I thought, too. I just wanted to double-check. I have a number of them (Scott 498) and it was just the color variations that threw me off track.
