Well we returned from Hartford last night and I am full of the rah rah !! for our hobby ! I attended part of my wifes Europa study group meeting and my Guatemala society meeting..guys came in from Houston and Detroit and basicly saw one another for an hour or two but thats the way we are..we may only see one another every few years but we are trusted friends when we meet..one of the guys in my society pulled a Liechtenstein #356 on cover a 50 dollar stamp out of a dollar cover box and gave it to me saying I think Jopie may like to have this...thats a nice gesture ..anyway my point is..if you collect stamps..belong to something that says you are a stamp collector...for many of you it might be the American Topical Association...it means you a serious collector and the journal always has something to learn about stamps !!

I agree after listening to several folks here I have joined the APS. I may join a couple other societies but I am trying to figure out which would benefit me the most

David, don't you belong to the American Topical Assn ? that would be a good general organization for a stamp collector to say they are a member of...remember folks...when you are a member of some type of chapter or stamp organization you build credibility with other collectors..they respect that you think enough to be a member !!

Phil is not normally right, but he's dead on here. I HIGHLY recommend that you subscribe to one collecting related periodical and belong to at least one group like the APS, GPS, ATA, ISGC, CRJY, FBI or such if you can afford it.

Your membership helps to grow the hobby and you might actually learn something useful!

I agree wholeheartedly....

.....think of it as "news you can use" to enhance your collection.

If you've never seen any of the trade mags, you will be very surprized at the quality and amount of information available for collectors.

The American Philatelist....monthly...APS.
MeKeels & Stamps....weekly.
US Stamp News...monthly.
Linns......weekly
Scott Stamp Monthly.
The American Stamp Dealer & Collector....10 issues per year.
The Chronicle.....monthly....USPCS

I'm sure there are others. If you'd like more info about any of these let me know.

You don't need them all but one or two will give you a lot of new info.

I'm glad that this thread has resurfaced. Please support the future of your hobby by being the member of a stamp related organization. You might just learn something and reap other benefits at the same time!

I agree that joining or subscribing to a stamp club or periodical will definitely enhance your knowledge and awareness of our hobby of kings. I enjoy my weekly dose of Linn's, monthly magazine from the APS, and picking up an occasional Scott Stamp Monthly at Barnes & Noble. Plus anytime I go to a show and there are free issues of publications available I pick one up and usually come away with some new insight into the various facets of stamp collecting. My local stamp club which is a chapter of the APS has monthly meetings and usually has a slide presentation to view (when we can get the projector to work).

Also, just by being a SCF member is something to be proud of and I try to log on at least once a day.

I am still debating about joining another association the ATA by the end of the year. Do I get a discount if someone sponsors me? LOL

When I see younger fellows (compared to me) like David Giles, Rick Lorenz and Stamperdude pursuing the hobby the way they do..i have confidence that stamp collecting will be around for a while !! The APS is at 40 thousand members now..its a tremendous organization and the advocate for the stamp collector..its the last big stamp society left..the SPA is just a memory..long live the APS !
