I think these are correctly identified as Scott 2149a (with "Presorted First Class" overprint Bureau precancel). However, I cannot find any reference to what appears to be a color variation. The left stamp is distinctly darker and has a much higher gloss tagging and what appears to be a slightly darker "Presorted First Class" overprint; the right stamp is considerably lighter in background color and has a much duller tagging and lighter overprint:

I see from the Scott Specialized Catalog that 2149a has low and high gloss gum varieties and tagged and tagging omitted varieties, but none would fit the stamps shown.

Are these just all grouped together as Scott 2149a and the minor color variations are meaningless? Or are there varieties not listed in the Scott catalog?

I am new to collecting and know next to nothing. Most of what I know about the hobby I have learned,(retention is a different thing) thanks to the great wisdom and knowlege of so many on this forum. I have a question about precancels. Do all non bureau precancelled stamps have a post office place name as well as the bars. The reason I ask is that I have this stamp and cannot find an image of it anywhere. The stamp looks as if a magic marker was used to draw the bars.

wt1, maybe this helps? 2149a is untagged with shiny gum, plate #'s 11121 & 33333.
2149e is a tagged error, also precanceled but with dull gum - same plate 3's.
This and more info can be had at the PNC3 website: www.PNC3.us/PNC3.org

Stampfan9, as far as I know the stamp you show has not been precanceled with two horizontal lines.
Your question about the towns name in between? Tne name is not necessarily in between the two lines; some stamps have been issued with just the lines.
This particular stamp, Scott 2149 has been issued as a "service Inscribed" ( precanceled ) stamp as you can see in Wt1's post above

wt - there was a varnish layer applied on top of the printing and the heavier it is the glossier it looks. Also the background sky on some is more uniform and on other it looks snowy (just poor printing).
