Hi Guys I havent seen any topic about underprints so I thought I start one. I will post an image of one that I have. As soon as i'am able. So in the meanwhile if you have any interesting underprints why not show them on the community I think that this could be an interesting topic to talk about.

Yes they are quite rare, I have a Tattersalls underprint on KG5 issues this is still not solved.
IIRC There were only two companies that GB allowed to underprint their stamps under the gum, W H Everett? I cannot recall the name right now. Of course the NZ adverts.

Thanks for the link 22 crows. No I was not aware at all of the site. I just happened to see one of my stamps had an underprint and I didn't knew what it was. ( If I remember correctly it was a spanish stamp with both a perfin and a underprint in the back ). It is now tucked away. And at the current moment I cannot take any pictures what so ever. I will post a picture of it later.. Could it be this one rod ? wattses. ( Not my stamp on the picture thou, the name kinda resembles of W H everett ) |

Please excuse my ignorance, but an underprint seems to be something printed on the stamp on the back but under the gum. Is that correct?
I believe that there is a South American country that did this. Not sure which one. I thought it was Ecuador but I looked and couldn't find them. |

Wow. I am never going to actually mess with my stamps again because I keep finding things on here I never knew and then have to go and look up more information. Underprints? I had never heard of these before now. I even have one (somewhere) but I just thought it was an error of some sort. I know time is the only way to learn and studying, but there is so much knowledge on this site it really makes me feel like I started collecting this morning. I am learning though so I appreciate all the threads and posts and links. Now I want to see if I can find this stamp.... |

Hong Kong is another underprinter for Commercial issues.
There are 2 types of underprints: 1) Pre-gum, is when the underprint is applied before the application of gum. 2) Post-gum, is when the underprint is applied over the gum, these can only be found in unused condition. Used copies the gum will be destroyed! |
