It's hard not to like a fuzzy teddy bear on a stamp. The bear was also used to symbolize strength, and it has appeared on various flags of California since 1846.
Along with the pony express rider it presents a great image of the American West.
It is believed these stamps were issued in 1866 by Henry Reed of the Holladay Overland and Express Mail Co.
The one missing from the set is 114L1 5 cent black.
