I am an aps member and receive sales circuit books in the mail and buy stamps from these books can anyone tell me what is the best way to detect damaged stamps.

For any U.S. classic collector, and I've posted this several times, one philatelic reference that is very helpful, and is a MUST, is: "How to Detect Damaged, Altered and Repaired Stamps" by Paul W. Schmid. Copyrighted in 1979, one may be able to find a copy on ebay or from any of the philatelic literature dealers-- James Lee, Phil Bansner, Leonard Hartman and many others.

I just looked and available from Amazon used from 22 bucks.....

The single best way to detect damaged stamps is to dip them in watermark fluid. It is an absolute must for the more subtle defects. Repairs can also be detected with watermark fluid
