With the U.S. collectors I hear the term "grading" with my Guatemala collection I look for the best acceptable copy I can find...all good perfs, clean cancel..of course no tears or creases...thats it !
I certainly can appreciate a well graded stamp. Unfortunately most of those can be out of my price range. I will try to balance the grade with my willingness to pay as I move strongly into the MNH arena. Though I have no problem building a collection that may not be the finest grade of stamps.
Seeing the price range between the grades does bring a new understanding to stamp collections though.
I relate "graded" stamps to investment quality material. I have some nice items, but I don't consider any of them investment quality -therefore, although I'd love to have graded stamps I don't need them to make me happy.
I don't have any "graded" stamps either. When I was and still am building my classic US collection I try to get the best stamp available at that time for what I am willing or can afford to spend. I have never sent a stamp to be graded. I know I have some that would grade very high but also that would grade lower. Since I am not worried about the "investment" I doubt I will ever send a stamp to be graded.....but who knows
Ric, I dont want to think about what happens to my stamps after I am gone...i am certain they are not an investment..even the investments I made in the last 8 years are not investments..tomorrow I go to invest in the ponies at Saratoga !!
