It might to do with the dpi definition of your file. The 20 pages might be drfined as 72dpi which is great for a computer screen and your own file may be defined with higher resolution.
I would suspect it's partly a function of your 600 dpi (or is it now 1200?) scans. If you want smaller files, I think you'll probably need to compromise on image resolution.
You can save considerably on file size by scanning only the images and not the entire page including text. Scanned text is represented as an image file, and it will take up much more memory than text entered via a word processor or spreadsheet, which is reproduced via the same methods as a True Type font.
Thank you gentlemen. Appreciate comments, after your advice I saw I had "high resolution images" selected in the printer I selected "small images" which broke it down to 16Mb still too high. I had been scanning the A4 pages at 200dpi I may have to drop that to 100dpi I'll try some settins to see how we go.
I may ditch it all though, am rather interested in "searchable *.pdf" which the vast array of philately really demands.
