I seen a 71 on ebay for a few bucks and grabbed it up. I can't wait to see it in hand but it will fill the hole until I get a better copy. This is the sellers image not mine so please bear with me. I'll scan it all proper when I get it. Anyhow enough chit-chat here is the culprit- The devil made me do it... lol

Well I would like some input. I'll give this a *bump* to get off the ground. I know I probably should have waited and most likely paid to much for it but was it re-perfered or repaired at all? Any input would be greatly appreciated. -Jeff |

Jeff, I think you should rethink buying this. It appears to be reperfed on the top and bottom. This is a $10-$15 stamp at best. |

I have a few honest questions for you (and others to get a discussion going), given your statements in the opening post: Why would you buy something with the thought of buying something better later? Why not wait, and save the money for the better stamp? Once you buy that better copy, what will you do with this one? Will you get your money back on this one when and if you sell it?
These are the kind of questions I'd be asking. Personally, I'd rather have 10 beautiful stamps that many people would want, than 100 mediocre stamps that are readily available on the market.
Am I alone in this thinking? |

Quote: Am I alone in this thinking? No you are not. I do not believe in purchasing Space fillers either. I have a want list that has no time frame for completion. My personal preference is what it is and I will wait until I find the piece that meets my criteria, however long it takes. |

Well I appreciate your honesty, I would expect no less. I do buy space fillers on occasion but that's not the norm. When I do buy a permanent spot holder I will now have trade fodder and get to check it out. I'm not upset. It is what it is. When it shows up I'll scan it and we'll see whats up with it for sure. Thank you. |

I guess it should be noted that I was really depressed when I bought it. I'm not a poor sport and knew from the get-go is was flawed it was just a spur of the moment ~ make me feel better sort of thing. I personally thought it was reperfed on at the least the right side and maybe the bottom but I really don't give a hoot. I wanted it, I bought it, it's done. it cheered me up. To me it was well worth it. I agree on some level or another about buying the good one up front and I'm deeply sorry that I don't follow your stringent collecting rules. I collect for quite a number of reasons and none of which is monetarily related. Like it or don't it's mine and I'm excited to get it in my mailbox! Also in my experience (What little I have) it would seem items are usually in a bit better condition than they appear on the sellers image. I usually will post a pic of any "big ticket" item I'm planning on purchasing so the collective brain here on S.C.F. can give me some reliable input so that I'm aware of all the issues that apply. To answer your other question about re-selling/making money etc... I don't sell my stamps period. For the record I also clearly document every blemish/Alteration (eg:soaking) in my notebook so I got my bases covered.

Hey, that's fine. It's yours and you should enjoy it. I'm fully in favor of anyone putting together the collection that they want under the criteria that they choose - cheapest possible, best possible, nothing over $5 - whatever. There is no wrong way to collect and no one should criticize anyone else's choice of what or how.
I was more curious as to the statement that you planned to buy another one that was better. Just seemed odd to me that you were talking that way even before this one arrived. If that was your feeling, made me wonder why you picked this one, rather than spending the same money on something you had no plan to upgrade.
But then again, I guess that's the same concept as finding a "starter wife."
Enjoy your purchase and YOUR collection and don't let anyone tell you that you're doing things wrongly. |

i just saw Jeffs post...we have to scoot off to a stamp show in Albany but just thought I would say..i can not speak too much about classic U.S. stamps..but I relate very much to Jeff, he is very open about what he does and invites discussion which is a great way to learn...i have been collecting stamps a LONG TIME and my own personal approach is when I purchase something..i don't look back..i did what I did and I move on ! |

I'm slowly getting that set put together along with the proofs. I really just had need for an example and I looked around (granted not too hard) and that one seemed to fit the bill. I will in the future, besides be more vigilant, get a nice example but I'm happy and that's all that counts. If you go through my posts you'll see I usually inquire about such things before I drop any kind of loot but I didn't his time. Oh well, I'm happy and it'll just fuel my desire to get a better copy. Quote: Starter wife.. .I had one of those once lol.. It lasted less than a year (7 months to be exact). My current wife I been been with over 10 years and fathered 2 children so practice makes perfect I guess..hahaha |

If it is reperfed, then you have good reference material. I keep all "collector inspired" stamps in a seperate collection for future reference. |
