Why counterfeit such a low value stamp ? At the time it was the cost of postage, and who's going to check all the two cent reds ?

When compared to a real one, the fake on the right looks like a poor quality imitation.

It does look like a poor quality imitation. But thanks to you posting this bogus stamp, I am all the smarter for paying attention. Thanks Tom, once again you are a vast wealth of information.

Are you sure its a counterfiet? when I compare the flat plate series of 1917-19 to the offset print series of 1918-20
I find not only size difference but the 18-20 series looks very poor in print quality when compared to the erlier runs. The offset printing was very flat and blurry compared to previous runs.

Just my thoughts
Richard

I've wondered about that in a generic sense also Notrare. It's like counterfitting $1 bills.

Hi Guys....

First things first.......Why counterfeit a low value......think of the time period, 1920's & 30's......produce cheap postage and sell it for half face.....who's going to check every two cent red. Also, there are documented counterfeits of these and other 2cent reds.

I've been looking at this thing about ten years and everything about it says fake. All lines are off or indistinct giving it a muddy look. The perf holes are a very sloppy perf 11, and the left frame in the bottom picture shows that the edge of the left outside frame is scalloped. I've never seen anything like this on any other two cent red. But the kicker here is that it is tiny, measuring just 18 3/4 x 21 1/2 mm

And, I've shown it to a couple of sellers at three different shows and all agree.

So yes, I am convinced it is a counterfeit.

However, if someone can present a reasonable argument to the contrary, I'm willing to discuss it further.
