I was the only bidder on this one today on ebay, so I won it for the opening bid of $72. It is definitely pink. Date range is correct, with December of '61. Bad copy with the trimmed perfs on the bottom, and even if it's only a 64, I'm OK with the $72. I've compared it to a couple of others, before I bid on it, and I think it may have a chance to be 64a. Always hard from a scan. I thought I'd post it here, in case anyone had an opinion: Seal, are you out there? :) Thoughts anyone? Thanks, Ray

I would give you an opinion ray.mac, but alas I'm learning from you. I'm looking forward to the replies to this one. |

Stallzer-- not a Ruh Roh situation at all-- this stamp WILL be either 64 or 64a. $72 plus expertizing, so about $100 for a faulty, rare, real 64 is still OK. It's a completely different color than the certified 64 I have, and if by chance it IS 64a....well, $100 total for a $5000 CV rare and VERY scarce 64a, even faulty, is the buy of my lifetime. If it happens.
I'm willing to take that chance, because the worst that can happen is it's 64. If it has other faults and it's 64, I can always return it, but I doubt that I would, since my main collecting interest are the different shades of the 3c 1861. If it isn't 64a, it could also be carmine pink or lavender pink.
Either way, lots of anticipatory excitement here to see how it turns out. Thanks, Ray |

At least you have a 64 to compare it too. From what I've been told, the only way to truly tell if the color is correct is to compare it to a known example of the same color. Hope it turns out to be the 64A. |

Not a 64a, but it was a 64, and the bottom was not trimmed. My cert from Bill Weiss reads: US 3c 1861 Used (Scott #64- Pink). It is genuine, very lightly toned, otherwise sound. Natural straightedge at bottom. Cooperstown/NY/Dec./1861 pmk.
I thought it was a trimmed bottom....THRILLED to see that it's sound and a natural straight edge. Nice buy for my $72, and then $35 for the cert and insurance.
When I had the stamp in hand, I knew it couldn't be a 64a-- color is much different in hand than on the picture. Much more faded and the paper is darker than the picture. Color not as rich. But was obviously Pink....
Sound, genuine, Scott CV $1000 stamp for a total of $107.......
Thought I'd share my good news! Ray |

Well done Ray! I've been away for a bit and not even looking on e-bay. Otherwise I may have bid on it myself!

Good buy Ray. That pink stamp I showed you a while back is a 64b rose pink according to Bill Weiss. Just got the cert back today. |

Nice find. However, I didn't think that there were natural straight edges on the bottom of the 3c 1861. Would be tough to have a straight edge on that stamp, as there was an imprint and plate number in the lower margin. I'm going to drop Bill a note asking him about it. Chip |

chipg-- good point-- and that's why I had thought that it was a trimmed stamp. I have several 65's with a perf, and then a straight edge after the perf. I don't know if it's a stamp that's been cut on the other side of the perf, or if it's a misperf of some type.
And also, I've never seen a picture of a page of the pinks-- is there any way that the layout was different on the early issues than the later issues?
I'm going to copy this thread to Bill also. It'll be interesting to see what he has to say.
Thanks again-- Ray

Stallzer-- you ought to post your possible pink here also-- really pretty one you posted on VSC....good luck on the ID or cert-- Ray
Winston-- again, that stamp wasn't pretty on the perfs, but what a color, and for the $4, or whatever you paid for it-- all I can say is WOW!
Thanks to all-- Ray |

Here it is Ray. I actually did post it here hoping to get your input but I did not give the thread a good title. My fingers are crossed on this one and I should receive it today or tomorrow and I'll post the actual Stamp scan. Either way I'm only into it for $2 |

Stalzer, these are each so different from one another it's so hard to tell from a pic but it has more rose, I think than the one I posted in this thread. Looks like a Good poss 64b though. Great find for 2$!
I just love looking for treasures. I found a sound 64b on Stamps2go for $19 a Couple of months ago and found a 25 on cover in Atlanta for 3$. It can really help to study a bit, don't ya think?! I really look forward to my bottom-feeding treasure hunting for the next several decades (I'm 54, so I hope so anyways :))
Again as I said on VSC, nice stamp! Thanks, Ray |
