Here's a picture post card right out of the news. It's one of several from Imperial Russia I have recently listed on ebay. This shows the Russian military road to Georgia, through the Caucasus. Some have reported that the Russians made the trip well in advance of entering Georgia, just waiting for an excuse to strike.

Captioned in both Russian and French, the card was mailed to Belgium and bears a circular date stamp of 28.3.14 with an Antwerp receiving stamp of 15 IV 1914.

Since nic bumped this, I'll ask a question.

There's a cancellation on the stamp, I can't quite make it out, but I think 28 March 1914? I assume the second postmark in the center of the card "15 IV 1914" means April 15th.

The real question ... Why the second mark?

I feel like such a dummy with so many of the topics here. Can you illuminate me a little

Kirk, The Russian circular date stamp (CDS) cancels the Russian stamp. As mentioned, above, the other is a receiving stamp showing the date it arrived in "Antwerpen" -- Antwerp, Belgium, its destination.

You have the dates right.

Modern,

I'm a little embarrassed to tell you, but I was so intent on looking at the scans, I didn't even SEE the line of text between them, much less read it.

I appreciate you humoring me with an answer rather than telling me to go back and READ. I'll try to remember that next time one of my students asks me a question that I just answered
