At the time Poe (alias Perry) arrived in 1827, Charleston boasted a cultural life that included the Charleston Museum, the country's first museum, founded in 1773, and still in existence today. Charlestonians were also fortunate to have a lively theatre. Poe's mother Elizabeth, an actress, performed in Charleston on numerous occasions. She died in 1811. Rosalie and Edgar Allan were placed in foster care. Edgar was placed in the home of Mr. John Allan, a Richmond merchant. Thus began his life of struggle and darkness.

Through Allan's benevolence he later enrolled in the University of Virginia, where he incurred heavy gambling debts that ultimately lead to a withdrawal from the University and a bitter separation from his foster father. Estranged from Allan and with no means of support, the former student enlisted in the army, and thus found himself posted to Ft. Moultrie, here in Charleston.

There is a small island named after him and a restaurant.

Is that a tobacco card? I've seen a couple different ones, but not this one, and it looks to be the right size although a bit mangled. Cool.

There's a good flickr group for tobacco cards: http://www.flickr.com/groups/cigarettecards/

Cigarette Card - Edgar Allan Poe by cigcardpix.

There are a couple other Poe related ones, one of one of his homes and this one of the man and a raven. I prefer yours personally. It's got me thinking--- a really cool exhibit would be "cacheted" covers before they were commercially available.
