I collect Montana general precancels (which means every denomination of every style). StI has 2 styles - here are my PSS843's:

Here is the other style, PSS744.5. Both styles have a book value of 0.25 so you can do a lot of hunting/collecting for very little cash outlay.

Nice collection, but what is/was the purpose of those PSS-843's on modern Great Americans issues? Hadn't the use of precancels more or less fallen away by that point? Was it just that someone had a precanceling device and decided to use it for collecting purposes? Were those modern precancels actually put into use or just favor cancelled? It just seems as though the need for precancels in later years was rather unnecessary.

Yes, Sidney, MT has precancels, 2 different types 729 & 801,
I have one using a type 801 but I don't have a working scanner.
I'm sure Chasa will have an example.

Sidney PSS801. BTW if you go to the PSS website http://www.precancels.com/ there is a list of dealer who might have these available. If you go looking at 'regular' stamp shows, you are unlikely to find any. Or, better yet, come doen to Tampa for the Florida Precancel Club winter meet Feb 8-11.

Wow. Those are great! I had no idea there would be so many stamps that featured precancels. I figured it wouldn't be very many. And just for one town! Wow. Hmmmm. I won't be popping down to Florida soon-- was just there this summer.

I'm the director of the museum in Sidney (The MonDak Heritage Center), we cover the history of Richland County and the area around it into western North Dakota (ergo, MonDak). I've been thinking of starting a postal history collection at the museum so I have a small exhibit (in museum terms) that can fill gaps in my exhibit schedule when the need arises.

Hmmm...
