Hi all I have been thinking to sell this old Civil War era cover. One problem is is it really a number 65 stamp? What if previous owner did not know and it maybe a 65B? Laid Paper. Anyway to tell? Also some confusion on the pencil mark 62 & 64, unfortunately the postmark is worn off. Any expert advise here appreciated. As if it is #65 it is worthy a mere 3 bucks. If it is 65B we are talking $750. Is this cover of any real value? Thanks in advance for your replies.

A larger scan of the Stamp would probably help those who might be able to help you. In the 2 scans, the stamp is the exact same size, you'll need something around this size. The reason I suggested that you post it here is that the difference between a 64 & 65 is huge. A 64 Catalog value is $1,100.00 and a 65 is $3.00.

Zooming seems to blur it (I'm watching, learning). I think you need to rescan it at 600 dpi , just the stamp with as little of the cover showing as psosible so to keep the file size down.

I will say it's got beautiful color and exceptional centering for that issue. Try scanning at 1200 dpi, my fingers are crossed for you.

Even scan at 1200 and host on photobucket ( email pic to me and I'll do it if your having problems) I'm not any good at these colors- I have about 20-25 copies with a wide range and as close as I think a couple are to pink its a tough call. The info on the cover actually makes things harder - is 62-64 year dates on the cancel and then the #65 in corner screams scott # . I must say regardless of # that it is a very nice well centered quality stamp . If I had to guess I'd go 64b. Also is the line on the bottom right S of US normal? I don't have mine handy to look at.

64B would be nice I see scott value $160 for that. Now I tried to get 600dpi very hard but what about this, any better? Is this stamp the diamond in the rough?

Heres Duncan stamp along with images from swedish tiger of pidgeon blood, pink and rose pink 64-64a-64b. I'm still baffled .

DUNCAN's

Pidgeonblood

64 pink

64b
Also noticed that duncans and the pidgeon blood have the line at the end of the S where the other 2 don't. Never noticed this line before so curious if anyone has any insights .

Thanks for pointing that line out, and for the image editing, good job. I would like to see mine compared to #65 and any other US stamp number possibility that maybe close to mine. See if any other known copies have the line there next to the s. Does this line you've kindly spotted mean mine is something valuable, rare and special? I am getting very excited here folks. I am looking at this under the microscope and that line next to the S is defiantly there. I hope I strike gold here

Yours may very well be just a 65 - here are 6 of mine of which I believe the first 1-2 may be rose pink. I can see the line on S on at least 2 so that seems to be common. Second pic is a gaggle of 3 centers

The stamp alone is with 3 bucks but because it is on a Civil War Cover so those cover collectors would want it for the postal history that should be worth a bit more than the stamp on its own. Some Civil war covers are going for extreme prices on ebay including ones with stamp #65. I saw one on there same stamp for over 100 bucks. So I think start price 5 bucks is fair.
