I bought a set of commemorative stamps from the post office, which came with mounts. I am getting ready to put these into my stamp book, but noticed that many of the stamps have plate borders attached to them. In order to fit into the mounts provided, I would have to remove the small border piece.

Does removing a partial plate border devalue a stamp? If so, does this mean I should get custom mounts?

We are not talking high-value stamps, but who knows, in 50 years, my decision could make a difference in value to someone.

Can anyone help?

I did a search and found out that what I'm asking about is selvage attached. I read a post that said these command a small premium....so I've answered my own question! Don't remove the Selvage!

You can buy larger mounts to accommodate the "Selvedge". Look on ebay for Showguard mounts or similar. Personally I'd leave the Selvedge attached but no it will not reduce the value for the Stamp as all catalog values are without selvedge.
