I recently decided to rebuild the database I was using to track my stamp collection. After slaving over the keyboard for about a week, I think I have a good, workable system. It still needs a lot of work on the backend to import the catalog data from my old database, but it's coming along nicely. Check it out! (it's a lot easier to follow if you blow the video up to full screen)

Wow, congratulations Postmaster on creating an impressive and well organized database. I collect Germany as well but nothing compared to the extensive collection that you have amassed.
By the way, you put together a great video.

Impressive>>> Both the Software and the collection are fantastic. I wonder which you spend the most time doing, the stamp collecting or the writing of the software? |

I spend a lot of time at the intersection of stamp collecting and computers. When I get tired of working on the database, I work on the website. When I get tired of working on the website, I work on scanning stamps. When I get tired of scanning stamps, I work on designing and printing album pages. When I get tired of building pages, I work on the database. Repeat ad infinitum. |

Very nice work Postmaster. Would anyone happen to know of a decent stamp program that would be freeware. I have seen several that are very good programs, but of limited funds after taking care of living expenses doesn't leave much to be able to buy these programs with. Any info would be greatly appreciated. |

Any info would be greatly appreciated. The only one I found which was half decent was GCstar. Another was Datacrow. With Datacrow you will need to download the stamp collecting module yourself. Or you can ask that that awesome database in this video me made available. |

Very nicely done, PostmasterGS!
I'm looking to do something similar for my classic Denmark and Sweden collections, and have been contemplating whether to tweak a canned inventory application, or use MSAccess to build my own from the ground up.
For me, the issue with readymade apps is that they tend to be geared to collecting "one of each" and they are typically very "USA-centric." I need to be able to enter values in different currencies, and track large numbers of variations and different cancels on the SAME basic stamp... with resulting values being "the BASE stamp PLUS a particular premium."
Most of this seems too advanced/complex for a pre-made app.
Whereas I mostly know HOW, I'm not a big fan of extensive coding... I think the last time I actually built/coded an Access database was with Access97 or maybe 2000... but I can't imagine it has changed hugely, in terms of basic structure. Maybe it's even more widget driven, now?
Anyway, thanks for sharing... feeling a bit inspired, now! ~Peter |

Peter,
The trick is getting/inputting the catalog data. If you had the catalog data in an importable format, it would be fairly easy to adapt the basic design to allow for additional currencies, premiums for cancels, etc. |

PostmasterGS, very impressive indeed! The ease that you demonstrate in the video shows the program is a winner. Keep on building :) |

I am also developing a stamp database. There is a thread below where I introduced it. It is hopefully going to be a collaborative site where everyone can use the contributions of others to keep track of their own collection. If you are interested in perhaps collaborating or sharing our experiences, I would greatly appreciate it. you can contact me at robert at zurer dot com. |
