SCF Support

What is the money collected by SCF Support used for? I'm happy to support the great info, advice and chuckles that the volunteers and the other members offer us so generously. But I'd like to know what the donation is paying for.

I hope I'm not offending anyone with this question. I'm just naive about what it takes to run a website when a lot of it is run by volunteers.

I'm not an expert but I know it costs money to run a site like this, even when it run by volunteers. I certain someone will come along and give you a better answer shortly.

the money is used to pay for hosting and such. It is very worthwile.

From first thought you may think a few moderators and once the site is set it runs flawlessly. What most people don't realize is the massive amont of images and information that is stored. Alot of forums purge or delete their history quite often but SCF is creating a long term database of knowledge . Also the efforts that go into generating tags and making it possible to maintain top search engine results is an on going battle. Just try googling and theres a good chance that SCF will be in the top 10 . There is revenues from advertising which is far more crucial but every penny counts. I think in the past year I've been here I have only ever seen the site go down for a couple hours which in itself in monumental. I'm sure there may be enough profit generated for an occasional beverage on the house but I fully believe the wizard behind the curtain deserves a bonus once in awhile. I have my own website that I can't even keep up with and thats just a few pics and text. The code that makes this site so flawlessly work would be insane to handle and a missplaced character can cause hours of work just finding the problem. I do personally hope someone is making something from the site and I believe it would be well deserved for the job thats done. Hope that helps a bit but I'm just a member giving an opinion.

Yep, goes towards operating/improvement costs. I can do a lot of coding myself, but a lot is over my head also and requires a paid developer. For example, the auction section on CCF cost almost $1,000. That's going to eventually be incorporated here also but needs more work first since we use a different type database here. That will cost money too. Goes for stuff like that.

Bobby I don't fall asleep. Tequilla has the oposite effect on me. But I won't go into detail, some people here think I'm a "good girl". If only they knew.

I still can't remember half the night, when I last drunk Tequila to excess (my 40th).

I learned my lesson on my 30th :)

My last Tequila night took place when I was still in the Marine Corp years ago. Needless to say after damages to a car and two hotel rooms. Then police asking why my buddy was passed out in his underwear on the balcony and patrons calling about the bloody hand prints on the car.
I said never again, I still have 11 inches of scars from that night.

A little of subject but brought back some ole memories.

Thank you for your explanations. I'm happy to donate---I just wanted to know what for. It's already been worth it for the info I've received so far. I'm sure even the tequila fund is justified after dealing with some of us!!

Thanks for starting this thread. Although I've been a member since 2009, I do a lot more lurking and learning than posting.

The site runs so smoothly, no flame-wars, unobtrusive moderators, friendly members, solid information and virtually no down-time, that I found I have been taking it for granted.

I forget that there are people behind the curtain working like he** to keep this site up!

So I just signed up as a supporter!

I know times are rough, but I'd like to encourage all of you like me (you know who you are -- I don't! ) who have been taking this site for granted to think about a donation.

Maybe we can get them off tequila and on to fine wines and scotch!
