[EDIT 2/4: changed subject line]

I recently acquired this registered letter and would like help in getting an identification and catalog value for the 2p stamped envelope.

The cover is addressed to Professor A(rthur) S(ampson) Napier of Headington Hill, Oxford (biographic information on Napier, then a professor of English at Oxford University is at the following link http://www.headington.org.uk/histor...cotuit.htm).

Tied to the cover by a double strike of a 28 June 1892 Alderly Edge duplex postmark is an 1881 1p lilac (16 dots) (Scott 89). There is also a registered transit mark on the face in which what should be the "C" in "Manchester" appears to be a "D".

The reverse contains an Oxford receiving stamp, and the flap has the embossed 2p registration stamp, which I'd like help with in terms of both identification and value.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Steve

Guess $1 or so.

Professor Napier was a Philologist:

The Napier Collection
The Old and Middle English sections of the library were based on Professor A.S. Napier's (1853-1916) personal library, which was acquired in 1916. The Napier pamphlets include many scarce late 19th and early 20th century academic dissertations on Old and Middle English philology.

Oxford University was a partner in the RSLP 19th Century Pamphlets Project, which funded the cataloguing of the Napier pamphlets. Click here for further details.

Nice envelope. If you can post its dimensions (imperial or metric) I'll look it up Huggins & Baker.

It looks to me like a 'franked' envelope and the stamp has been added to make the total up to 3d.
Nice acquisition

In the Victorian period, the embossed stamp on these envelopes paid the minimum resgistration fee and postage (and any fees for additional compensation) had to be paid with adhesive stamps.

In this case the 1d stamp paid for the postage.

It's good to see the Alderley Edge postmark.

I was in Alderley Edge a few weeks ago and had a very good curry!.

Nice part of the country.

The envelope measures 153mm X 99mm and is surprisingly sturdy -- it has been reinforced with a fabric mesh backing.

Philology must have paid really well. Here is the house he had built on Headington Hill in 1892.

If it happened to be the issue with 14 Pearls in the corner instead of the 16 Pearls, it would be worth considerably more.
Still a nice Registered Cover !

Yes, with 14 dots the price is $60.00, but I agree 100% that is a nice cover, I like it!
