There is a "quiet" announcement at the bottom of page 64 of the 02/09/2012 Postal Bulletin referencing two possible new issues:

A 45c Forever Purple Heart Stamp (possibly a re-issue of last year's stamp with a 2012 date?); and

A 1c Bobcat Stamp in a coil of 3000 (presumably for mass mailers).

As far as I know, these stamps were not previously announced by the USPS and no further details have yet been provided.

They sure don't! My pet peeve is that there is also no one accurate source to go to for updated information. USPS seems to be listing (or changing) things in the USPS website, the USPS Facebook, Beyond the Perf, and even their own Postal Bulletin that often contain inaccuracies or last minute changes that no one anticipated.

It seems to me that there is no one "Department Head" overseeing the release of information to the general public and the updating of the various web and social media sites involved. As a result, we have a "mix" of both correct and incorrect information and last minute changes that don't even get recorded (i.e. For example, the early 02/02/2012 release of this year's Love stamp, still being set for a "first day of issue" on 02/14/2012) that is making a laughing stock of the USPS by having them "bend" their own regulations regarding early issuance of stamps before the official First Day of Issue is announced.

As of this evening, USPS Facebook has posted an image of the new 1c Bobcat stamp to be issued in coils of 3,000 (PSA) AND coils of 3,000 and 10,000 (WAG). Date or location of issue not yet announced:

One good thing about the stamp is that with it's low value and high volume coils, collectors can typically purchase strips of 25 through SFS and get the plate numbers without having to purchase an excessive quantity of the stamps to do it.

In the 04/17/2012 USPS blog "Stamp of Approval", a reference is made as to a June 1st issue date for the 1c Bobcat Stamp in San Marcos, TX:

Would one have to put 45 of those on a letter for a F.D.C.? How does a 1 cent stamp get to adorn an FDC?

Use a 44c stamp and add a 1c stamp to it. As long as the postage adds up to 45c you're okay. Since these are coil stamps, most would prefer to have a strip of 2, 3, 4 or 5 affixed to their cover(s).

If you want to keep with the animal theme, a "Save Vanishing Species" Tiger Cub Stamp would look cute next to a couple of 1c Bobcat Stamps.

Thanks for the response. I am new to stamp collecting. When do they come out with scott numbers? I would have thought when it was released it would have one. Who gives them the number? the postal service?

Thanks,
Debbie

Give it a few more weeks and the Scott Numbers are usually published. Keep in mind that the numbering system is NOT a USPS process, but is done by the Scott Catalog (Amos Press) who also publishes Linn's Stamp News, so typically that stamp publication gets first crack at announcing the new Scott Catalog Numbers as they are identified.

For your information, the last few US stamps for which Scott Catalog numbers have been announced are:

Quote:
4651 (45˘) Cherry Blossom Centennial – Washington Monument
4652 (45˘) Cherry Blossom Centennial – Jefferson Memorial
4652a     a. Horiz. pair #4651-4652

4653 (45˘) American Treasures Series - Flowers, by William H. Johnson

4654 (45˘) Twentieth Century Poets - Joseph Brodsky
4655 (45˘) Twentieth Century Poets - Gwendolyn Brooks
4656 (45˘) Twentieth Century Poets - William Carlos Williams
4657 (45˘) Twentieth Century Poets - Robert Hayden
4658 (45˘) Twentieth Century Poets - Sylvia Plath
4659 (45˘) Twentieth Century Poets - Elizabeth Bishop
4660 (45˘) Twentieth Century Poets - Wallace Stevens
4661 (45˘) Twentieth Century Poets - Denise Levertov
4662 (45˘) Twentieth Century Poets - E.E. Cummings
4663 (45˘) Twentieth Century Poets - Theodore Roethke
4663a a. Block of 10, #4654-4663

4664 (45˘) Civil War Sesquicentennial - Battle of New Orleans
4665 (45˘) Civil War Sesquicentennial - Battle of Antietam
4665a a. Pair, #4664-4665

4666 (45˘) Distinguished Americans Series - Jose Ferrer
4667 (45˘) Louisiana Statehood Bicentennial

Although there's no guarantee that these will be the new numbers, if they keep with chronological issue dates, it stands to reason that the next numbered stamps would be:

4668-4671 = Great Film Directors (4 designs); and
4672-4676 4677-4681 = Mail a Smile (5 designs)

Once a month, Linn's Stamp News publishes a Special Edition, which contains the Scott New Issues Update. Scott catalog numbers for all new stamp issues from the last few weeks are published here (for some countries they might catch up with a whole year's worth of stamps). The digital edition of Linn's is published every Monday morning. The next Special Edition will be published three two Mondays from now (that would be July 9, I think July 2). If you don't want to subscribe to Linn's, the Virtual Stamp Club re-publishes the Scott catalog numbers for U.S. issues on their forum. The USPS has no control over the Scott catalog numbers. The numbers are the property of Amos Press, the publishers of the Scott catalogs and Linn's Stamp News.

Enjoy your stamps, Robert
