Hi All

Here are some real old covers. Actually, they are fronts only. I got these in a large lot of covers and cards and the price was not too bad at all.

Nice. Really lots of scope for research. Mostly FREE fronts from members of UK parliament and the odd lord or such. Second one down has a red "1" and a "tombstone" postmark.
Last one is worth another look as it has "Sir Oswald Mosley Bart." written on the front. This Bart.(Baronet) died in the 1870's. He was a ancestor of another Sir Oswald Mosley who was leader of the British Fascists in the 1930's. Signature obscured but may come off? Perhaps, looking at the way it has been previously mounted, it may have a signature on the back?

Thanks all for your comments.

Scotzm, that is interesting about Mosley. Once these fronts are properly displayed in my albums, I will have to mark that down.

What I am wondering now is, these are 'supposed to be fronts' only but this is the scan of the other side of the Mosley item you mentioned. Were they conserving paper back then and re-using the envelopes?? Also. with free postage, was re-using the same envelope a common practice??

Interesting alright

Here is a scan of the opposite side.

FRONTS were very collectable even in Victorian times. Mostly from Members of Parliament, Lords and Bishops, and some government officials. Highly collectable today by autograph collectors and philatelists. Your Sir Oswald Mosely front is really a goody!
No envelopes were used back then... could have been a double sized sheet used and folded to form the entire and then re-used. Might have been a "forwarded" letter to someone else.

Thanks again scotzm

Every little bit of information helps.

Once I get to mounting these fronts, I will scan one of the sides of the Mosley one so that both images will appear on my page.

All the best
