Just wondering if anyone knew of any resources out there that detail information about cancels on late 19th century stamps ( I am particularly interested in cancels on my columbians...)

Thanks,
Eric

Maybe this will help - Here are some examples - Does anyone know anything about some of these cancels? - e.g. What do the numbers represent, etc.?

Our resident cancellation expert, Russ, is taking a sabatical due to the passing of his wife. His resources seem endless pertaining to this very topic. I wish him well and a speedy return. Until then, perhaps someone else will pick up the torch and carry it?

here is a helpful page on machine cancels but most of what you have are duplex and oval hand cancels from hand held devices. This might keep you busy anyway. Good luck and love the target cancel!

Here's a few more of my favorites...If you can tell in the photo, the first 3 are colored cancels (the 6cent has a dark purple cancel)

I am not sure what the 4th one is (the 8 cent) - its handwritten, with a year, and a "S / 5"

Yes - I have an addiction to columbians - I have over 600 of them...

The one you are "unsure of" Eric is whats called a Pen Cancel. I actually collect them but from what I have read most collectors shy away from them but I think that's silly... lol

The S/5 looks like a 5/5 to me, with the hat of the 5 having missed the stamp. So that *might* make it read 5/5/1895 ... date of cancellation?

I too always liked the Columbian issues and I attempt to collect just about all printed matter relating to the Columbian Exposition like tickets and small adverts like postcards and cancellations.

Manhattan day ticket reverse engraving:

obverse engraving and print:

washington A ticket

Lincoln A ticket obverse:

reverse (appears someone attempted to hinge this in an album or display):

Half Dollar obverse of both 1892 & 1893:

these are not mine but thought worthy of mention because of subject matter
