There are those who consider the orange special delivery to be a part of the Columbian set because the color of the blue special delivery was changed so as not to be confused with the blue Columbians. |

The color of the special delivery stamp was changed from blue to orange on January 24th 1983 because it was easily confused with the 1 cent Colombian (Scott 230) On January 5th 1894 printing in blue resumed. The stamp was also printed in orange until about May 19th 1984 when the stock was exhausted. The blue stamp was reissued at this time. The E4 was issued in Oct 10 1984 replacing the E3
Thanks Rohumpy for reminding me of this information I am sorry I did not mention it |

I believe this cancel is known as a " barred oval '1' " for anyone who might care about these things. |

MODERN:
I collect barrel cancels with numerals, letters, and words (Wall Street, Air Mail, etc.) on U.S. air mail stamps. I will scan some next week when I get my new computer. I have numbers as high as 98, letters up to Y and one has a star in the centre.

Very nice Rick. I also like interesting cancels - one reason Germany appeals to me. They have hundreds of interesting, intricate cancels! |

I have many of these cancels and wondered what they were called.

David, is there a difference between barrels and barred ovals? Learned about numbered barred ovals working with some old Cape Of Good Hope covers earlier this year. |
