I took my son to a local stamp show today. One of the dealers was a husband wife team. The wife was a school teacher teaching the same grade as my son. She talked with him about how she uses stamps to teach her students about different topics. Whenever they are learning about a specific country or theme she gives them a pile of stamps and asks them to find stamps that relate tomthe subject they are learning.
In addition to teaching the subject the kids are learning about stamps as well. My son was very impressed and talked about stamps the whole ride home.
We need more educational opportunities like these for the stamp collecting youth of today.
I got started in collecting for pretty much the same reason: My father worked at a company that did lots of international trade (in the 60's and 70's) and he saw stamps as a way to teach me about geography and different cultures around the world.
I very much enjoyed finding stamps and then looking up the places in our big atlas (with my dad's help), when I was 6-8 years old.
