A modern set that I have come to love.
Just recently I got these Lewis & Clark singles on a piece of mail and I had the other from when it was originally released but was just marveling at the brilliant color scheme and beautiful engraved-like features. Just stunning and believe that this set should stand as a sort of 'milestone' for future issues.

Nice. Certainly more colourful than the 1954 commemorative.

I just went back to an old Postal Bulletin where the 2004 Lewis & Clark singles shown in the first scan were put on sale. That was a relatively difficult stamp to acquire, as it was not available at local post offices, one had to buy them from a Philatelic Center post office or from the USPS Stamp Fulfillment Service. Further, they were considered a "prestige" booklet and were sold as a booklet of 20 for $8.95, which meant the stamps cost about $0.45 each even though they had a "face" value of only $0.37. Also, the stamps were not engraved but were produced by the intaglio/offset method of printing.

Still a very nice, colorful pair of stamps. Unfortunately, the availability and cost recited above meant that most examples weren't seen on too much non-philatelic mail.

That's about right wt as I vividly remember riding my mountain bike all the way into town (Jersey Shore PA.)to our local Post Office and asked for the new Lewis & Clark stamps and they told me either they was sold out or they were on order. I checked and check and checked again and no cigar; or Lewis & Clark respectively! That's why when I got those on a piece of mail recently my heart literally fluttered and I was more excited with that than the new Molly Pitcher stamps the cover had contained! Sound like a true stamp collector or what! Ha Ha!

The modern set of Lewis and Clark stamps were issued in a brilliant booklet form that I was lucky enough to buy two of. I have tucked them away for the future.....possibly to give to my daughter who shows an interest in stamps.

Where are you from in NECPA? Williamsport? I actually moved to Curwensville a yea ago but otherwise lived in Jersey Shore my whole life. I hate it here and want to go back to my little mountain town.

wt1,

I had thought intaglio was another term for engraved. Am I wrong? I had thought that the frame was intaglio printed (engraved) and the vignette offset printed. In any case, they are very attractive.

I live near Phildelphia now. I grew up in the city, though. Great time around the bicentennial here. Wish I'd been old enough to go to Interphil 76.

Those are great stamps. I have the portraits on a magnet from the USPS.

@ I Love Stamps, 4 is not too young for a stamp show. My son (5 yrs) & now my daughter 16 mos) have been going to stamp shows since they were born. My son enjoys looking thru stamps, covers, and postcards. Plus most dealers enjoy seeing a kid and it helps me get a better deal (sometimes). LOL!
