'Morning all.
Does anyone know what this type of U.S. cancel is called. Long wavy lines with the name of the city. Also is it a hand cancel or machine?

Thanks for enlightening me.

Possibly both, looks like a "roller cancel" to me.

Roller cancel, applied by hand -- notice how the text is not straight, but actually curves a little.

Thankyou gentlemen. As I'm mounting my cover collection in the album I'm trying to learn about the types of cancels and give each cover a comprehensive description. Turning from collector to philatelist.

That type of cancel was very common the in 1960s--it was used primarily on parcels or oversized envelopes. Here's another example:

Somebody recently posted a youtube film on SCF
in it, there was a postal clerk happily roller cancelling mail,
I thought I would mention it,
but then thought, nah! that's boring :)

The curious marriage of "Machine" and "by hand" has another oblique,

I was watching a docco last evening,
they were making "Harris Tweed" cloth on a loom operated by foot.

"Hand made by Foot" was the narrators comment.

Several images lately on this forum of hand stamps and cancel 'machines' make me want to start collecting those too.
Don't you people know I'm weak? Someone save me from myself!

Really let yourself go and collect "pictorial cancels", such as this example:
