In the 1800's many covers have the Stamp/s on the left side of the cover. 1882 would be a very late usage of that Stamp as it was issued early 1860's. As far as color it is very hard for me to tell but someone with more knowledge should chime in on it. |

Thank you for posting such a wonderful cover. I enjoyed seeing it. Someone with better eyesight than mine will have to ID the color |

Love the handwriting on this cover. Thanks for sharing. I would go with rose on color , evethough it almost shows a pinkish hue, but I am a student learning so hopefully ray.mac and others will chime in on this one. |

Date looks like 1861 to me and December works as EKU is Aug 17, 1861. Can never tell these from an online image. Need white light (Ott Lites are really nice for Iding color) and a known stamp to compare it to.
Could be 64b, might not be. Best would be to send it to Bill Weiss for a Certificate or ID only. Hope this helps, Ray |

Thanks Ray, after reading your comments and comparing to your cover and the date, I do believe the cancel date is Dec 23 1861. Looking at it, I can just make out what looks like the beginning edge of the 6, not an incomplete 8, below is an enlarged copy of complete cancel. I know it is nearly impossible to review color on monitors but when side by side to yours, this appears a but "dirtier" in color. That said, can you let me know best process to send for evaluation. Do I need to or is it best to belong to any associations etc.? Thanks |

Gorgeous patriotic cover you have there! I am very partial to these and must admit to have never seen this particular sachet before? I like the color mis-registration as it kind of hints to the "patriotic fervor" of the period to get these printed en-mass and off to the public for use! I have to concur with ray.mac the CDS does appear to read 1861 and that would make more sense but I can't make out the correct hues in a scan. Thank you for showing us that! I love it. |

Thanks all, I myself love the penmanship on this cover. Wished I would have listened better to the Nun's during school and kept up with cursive rather than printing myself.
ILS, to your point of rushing these out...I have done some reading on the older revenue stamps and found loads of chaos during the period so kind of know what your saying. In the rush to print these, you can see the ink is dramatically overloaded, so much so, there is a fairly good transfer of ink/image from another envelop on the back side. |

Here is Bill Weiss's website which will tell you everything you need to know to submit the cover for a cert or I'd only.
The site states has authored several books, one of which is the definitive catalogue of civil war patriotic covers.
Hope this helps. Thanks. Ray |
