If you really enjoy the A25 design variations, I would recommend getting copies of the Scott Specialized Color Guide for United States Stamps or a real investment of the R.H. White Encyclopedia of the Colors of United States Postage Stamps. Volume 1 covers issues 1847-1868 and has nice plates of each color as well as changelings with examples.

Another although not fool proof test is to as James mentioned scan all stamps together with black backround and leave some open space- Copy the images from swedishtiger website of certified copies and drag the known scanned copies into your image. Again this is only a subtle gauge and since you are dealing with scanners there is room for error. On these my eyes often see pink but when I compare to the known pics I usually say wrong again.
