Folks,
So I have done tons of reseach, taken pics of my stamps to compare, but am still having troubles determining a 491 from a 492. Can someone explain to me and have a look at 2 stamps I have which I believe are both 492 (hope I am wrong) but need confirmation. Many thanks!

Shannon

Shannon,

I can't tell from your image but the simplest way to distinguish between the 491 (Type II) and 492 (Type III) is to look at the number of shading lines in curve of the ribbon. If there is only 1 you have a Type II and if there are 2 it is a Type III. Here are some images pulled from the 1847USA website ( http://www.1847usa.com/ ) that show what to look for.

SC 491 and SC492 are relatively easy to tell apart as described above.
The real problem is distinguishing SC 491 from SC 454 because the watermark can be hard to detect on SC454.

Chasa has it 100% correct here.
I had one that I swore was a 491 for years, and when I finally sent it to Bill Weiss for a certificate, I told him I'd eat the stamp if he found a watermark. I never ate it, but he found a watermark.

Fortunate for me, I found, for $41 on ebay about a year ago, a 491, with beautiful margins, scissor cut on one side, now with a cert. Would grade VF-XF easily, and I haven't seen one on ebay as good as my copy since then.....again....$41.....$700 CV stamp.

Really, Really tough issue........good luck!
