Can anybody tell me how I find out about plate numbers. Does the Scott catalogue list plate numbers etc.

For what period are you referring to? Early issues or modern? Today, the plate numbers are virtually meaningless thanks in large part to computerization. Nevertheless, the American Plate Number Single society may be one source for you to check out:

What type of info do you need? Durland list all known plate numbers for BEP printed stamps.
